Man gets 10-year RI for rape of minor

The Kozhikode Principal Sessions Court on Friday sentenced a man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs.35,000 after he was found guilty of raping a 16-year-old school girl near Mukkom in the district nine years ago.

Judge V. Bhaskaran found Chennamangaloor Irumbichi Thodikayil Subin Raj, 35, guilty of rape and attempt to murder. The court ordered that the penalty amount be given to the victim.

The crime was committed on the banks of Irivanjipuzha river on February 28, 2004.

Subin raped the Plus-Two student while she was bathing in the river and later stabbed her in abdomen.

The court sentenced the man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 under Section 376 ( rape) and seven years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.15,000 under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC.

The imprisonment term will run concurrently.

If the accused refused to remit the penalty he would have to undergo three more years in prison.
