Random checks were carried out at 25 petrol pumps in Kozhikode district as part of a special drive by the Legal Metrology Department, following a directive from the Union Ministry of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs to closely examine the accuracy of fuel dispensing.

Over the past three days, the 10-member Legal Metrology squads, split into two groups, covered Kozhikode, Vadakara and Koyilandy taluks and inspected bunks operated by various dealers using a 10-litre standard checking measure. Squad members said no major incidents of violations or attempts to tamper with the dispensing machines were traced during the drive.

“The inspection was launched across the State last week as incidents of tampering with fuel dispensing machines using electronic chips were reported from various districts of Uttar Pradesh. The squad members spent around two hours in each pump to conduct a flawless inspection,” said Legal Metrology Department Assistant Controller V.R. Sudheer Raj. He said the drive would be continued on Tuesday.

In Kozhikode district, the total number of petrol bunks run by various companies comes up to 150.

Mr. Sudheer Raj said the inspections found minor errors on the part of some dealers, who had not properly maintained fuel supply pipes or replaced worn out ones.

“Even in those cases, there were no instances of short dispensing of petrol and diesel,” he said.
