The “negligible” number of appointments made by the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) from its existing rank list for LD clerks from Kozhikode district has strongly disappointed a large number of job aspirants from the district.
Office-bearers of the LD Clerk Rank Holders Association, in a press conference here on Tuesday, said they would resort to various agitations, including a fast unto death in front of the Collectorate, if the authorities were not listening to their demands.
The current rank list for the district was published by the commission on March 31, 2012. The list of 3,920 members was prepared out of 1,25,000 applicants after conducting the test. “Though the list was published over two years ago, only around 400 people from the district were appointed till date,” said E.K. Jithesh, president of the association.
With the current list expiring in March next year, the association members said it was the smallest number of appointments ever in the history of the commission from the district. The last rank list, according to them, had appointed as many as 1,100 candidates from the district.
Maintaining that even the few appointments made by the commission so far was following heavy pressure from the association through different means, Mr. Jithesh said that some departments, including Police, Registration, Irrigation, Health, and Education, were very reluctant to report their vacancies. The association members maintained that over 200 vacancies of LD clerks were remaining unfilled in the district even as hundreds were eagerly waiting for their turn in the list.
The commission, according to them, had made more appointments from the list of the Malappuram district (650) despite the district having lesser number of government institutions, when compared to Kozhikode. “This shows that appointments can happen if there is enough people in power to pressurise,” said S. Sindhu, another office-bearer of the association.
