The Kozhikode Corporation Kudumbasree has opened doors for women from residents associations in the city to be part of its fight against cancer. As Jeevanam, Kudumbasree’s comprehensive campaign against cancer, enters its third phase, more emphasis is being given to breast cancer and ways to fight it. Though Kudumbasree already has around 100 well-trained Breast Brigade volunteers to create awareness on breast cancer, they were found to be inadequate and hence the step to recruit more volunteers in each residents association.

“It will be easier for women to communicate about their health with people whom they know well. Hence we have chosen women from respective residents associations,” said M.V. Ramsy Ismail, Project Officer of Kudumbasree in the Corporation.

Three women of the age group of 30 to 40 can be Breast Brigade volunteers in each residents association. The first level of training for the selected volunteers will be held on March 21.

The volunteers have to work only in their own associations.

They have to create awareness among women in their associations on ways to detect breast cancer. They will also have to identify those that show possibilities of breast cancer and provide suggestions to change their lifestyle so as to ward off the disease. The training is being provided by Malabar Cancer Care Society and EKSAT, Kudumbasree’s training wing.

Filter camp

Meanwhile, the filter camp as part of the third phase of Jeevanam will be held at Tagore Centenary Hall on March 20. A mega cancer check-up camp will be held on March 28.

The Sanjeevani mobile tele-medicine unit of Malabar Cancer Centre will be put to use for the camp.

Over two phases, Jeevanam has been able to assist 36 women in detecting cancer, seeking primary treatment and sometimes expert treatment at Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Kozhikode Corporation has set aside ₹40 lakh for the third phase of the project.
