Former Minister K.P. Noorudeen passes away

Former Minister and senior Congress leader K.P. Noorudeen passed away at a private hospital here on Sunday.

The 77-year-old breathed his last around 9 p.m. while undergoing treatment following a fall near his house in Kannur.

According to hospital sources, Mr. Noorudeen died of cerebral haemorrhage. Senior Congress leaders were present at the hospital at the time of his death.

Born at Peruvamba in Kannur district in 1939, Mr. Noorudeen started his political journey with the Youth Congress in 1953.

Key positions

The man who proved his mettle in the political turf held key positions in the party. Mr. Noorudeen was a member of the Kannur District Congress Committee and the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee for several years.

He also led government subsidiaries such as the Coir Marketing Federation, Kerala State Financial Enterprises, and the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board to the track of development.

Elected five times

He was elected from the Peravoor Assembly constituency for five consecutive times.

Trouncing the Left Democratic Front rivals, he represented Peravoor in the Assembly from 1977 to 1991. From 1982 to 1987, he was Minister of Forests, Animal Husbandry, and Sports in the K. Karunakaran Cabinet.
