Kozhikode sexual abuse case: freed man to be grilled

The Crime Branch team tasked to reinvestigate the Nadapuram sexual assault case in which a kindergarten girl student was sexually abused is likely to grill the school bus cleaner from Kannur who was earlier freed by the local police following a huge public protest led by some of the people’s representatives from the region.

Sources said the statements given by the cleaner to various police officers during previous interrogations would be cross-examined for more clarity.

However, they denied commenting on some of the confidential reports of rural police officers that the cleaner had reportedly confessed to his involvement in two other such incidents and that his role in the new incident could not be ruled out because of public protest.

Nadapuram had witnessed noisy scenes when the local police tried to nab the bus cleaner after finding crucial evidence against him in the incident. Some of the people’s representatives from the region, who led the protest, had then alleged that the police were trying to make him a scapegoat and free three suspected senior students from the same institute who were prima facie found responsible for the attack on the kindergarten girl.

Following widespread protest, the police were compelled to free the man and confirm the arrest of two students who were reportedly identified by the girl during an identification parade.
