The police will strengthen its on-road traffic enforcement in 2015. The mission is to bring down the number of accidents.
The vehicles of people who jump red signals and use mobile phones while driving will be seized immediately, City Police Commissioner A.V. George told reporters here on Wednesday.
The aim was to make Kozhikode an accident-free zone with the participation of the public, he said. Those violating traffic signals would be charged under Section 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code. A fine of Rs.1,000 would also be slapped on them under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, he said.
As per official records, the total number of road accident deaths in 2014 was 155, against 182 in 2013. In 2014, the police booked 8,000 persons on charges of drunk driving in the city.
The drive to detect drunk driving would be intensified, he said.
The use of mobile phones while driving would be considered a serious offence. The phone and the vehicle would be seized immediately. The enforcement drive was not meant to trouble motorists but to ensure their security. In 2014, the police had registered 100 petty cases against those found using mobile phones while driving, Mr. George said.
The drive of the police against the illegal trade of narcotics would be strengthened.
“In 2013, narcotic cases registered in the city was 166, which increased to 220 in 2014. The City Shadow Team had done a commendable job in this regard,” he said.
