A long line-up of programmes will mark the year-long golden jubilee celebrations of the Government Arts and Science College, Kozhikode.

An international History Congress, a science seminar, cultural meet, a health, science and cultural exhibition, and an inter-collegiate sports meet are some of the major programmes in the line-up.

According to M. Sathyan, convenor of the programme committee, a three-day a health, science, educational, and cultural exhibition which begins on the college campus on Thursday, will be the first in a series of events to be organised as part of the celebration that will be formally inaugurated on November 15 by Governor Nikhil Kumar.

The exhibition would be an interesting mix of art science, culture, education, and environment among other things, said Mr. Sathyan, also a lecturer at the college.

Besides government organisations like ISRO, Zoological Survey of India, Regional Science Centre, and Centre for Water Resources Development and Management, several agencies and firms such as Sargalaya Craft Village, Kottakkal Aryavaidya Sala, Milma, Kerala Chalachithra Akademi, Kerala Numismatics Society, and a noted puppetry group from north Kerala will feature in the exhibition. Entry to the exhibition, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., will be restricted by pass. The fee would be Rs.5 for students and Rs.10 for adults, said the organisers. Schools and other educational institutes could collect their pass in advance, they said.

A proclamation rally on the year-long celebration of the students, teachers and staff members of the college was held on October 17. The rally began on the college premises and concluded at the Government Teachers’ Training College Campus, Mananchira, where the arts and science college started functioning five decades ago in a temporary building.

As part of the celebration, 12 departments of the college are also conducting national-level seminars. “We are trying to make it a memorable event for the entire college community,” said P.M. Raghavan, principal of the college.

He said the international science conference and the Kerala History Congress, planned to be held in November, would also have participants from different parts of the world including Africa.

Efforts were on to invite President Pranab Mukherjee for the valedictory function of the event, Mr. Sathyan said.
