The first two postal ATMs in Kozhikode, one at Civil Station and another at Mananchira Head Post Office, were inaugurated by District Collector N.Prashanth on Wednesday.
The Department plans to set up 16 more such ATMs in the district in the first phase of the project.
In his address, the Collector said that the postal department, the only network that reaches every nook and corner of the country, needs to reclaim its erstwhile glory and that its entry into the banking sector was a right move in the direction.
This would enable people in thousands of villages in the country, who had no access to banks, to be part of the banking sector.
He added that it would be an added bonus and a huge relief if the customers could make financial dealings of other banks too through the India Post ATMs.
The Collector appreciated the postal department for distributing and delivering the postal ballots effectively without cause for any complaints during the recent Assembly elections.
Director of Postal Services (Northern Region) Vinod Kumar, Post Master General Anjali Anand, Assistant Director (Technology) Mini Rajan, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices (Calicut Division) A.Sudhakaran and Post Master at Civil station post office V.T.Baburaj Nair were present at the inaugural function .
