Problems that would crop up with the advent of monsoon were raised at the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation Council meeting on Thursday.
Councillor Moideen Koya took up the issue of pre-monsoon cleaning, and complained that the fund promised by the State government had not yet been sanctioned to the Corporation.
Councillors E.M. Soman and Amina spoke on the increasing incidence of jaundice in the city. Both highlighted the situation at Mayanad, where effluents from the medical college were posing a problem. Ms. Amina said that the fund sanctioned for cleaning drains was meagre. Mayor A.K. Premajam said the issue would be brought to the notice of the authorities.
K. Sini raised the issue of low voltage which hindered regular water supply to various parts of the city. The Kerala Water Authority was unable to pump water as many motor pumps were rendered non-functional owing to low voltage. The Mayor said she would raise the issue with the KSEB and the KWA officials.
Water scarcityT.P. Koya Moideen raised the issue of water scarcity. He said the raised electricity charges made efficient water supply non-viable.
A comment by councillor P. Kishenchand on discontinuation of water supply at some parts was taken up by the council and the Mayor promised to take immediate action.
K. Sathyanathan spoke on the deplorable condition of the public crematorium in Mavoor Road and blamed vested interests for the damage caused to the machinery at the nearby electric crematorium. M. Radhakrishnan called the council’s attention towards the delay in Plus Two admissions in the State and suspected a scheme to sabotage the single window system.
Mr. Kishenchand blamed the Corporation for the deplorable condition of the Tagore Centenary Hall. Air-conditioners were not functioning.
He pointed out that even Jnanpith laureate M.T. Vasudevan Nair condemned the condition of the hall during a recent event there.
The Corporation Chief Engineer said the air-conditioners would be repaired by evening.
Meanwhile, a comment by Mr. Kishenchand was deemed defamatory by the Mayor and some councillors. Later Mr. Kishenchand withdrew the comment.
