Why should we even think about joining hands with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)? We are the ‘aam aadmi’ of Kerala. We do not need another party — was how the newly appointed State secretary of the Community Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Kodiyeri Balakrishnan responded to a question on a possible tie-up with the AAP in the coming local body polls.

Mr. Balakrishnan was addressing mediapersons at a Meet the Press programme organised by the Calicut Press Club on Thursday. In his address, he supported the allegations made by Chief Whip P.C. George in connection with the Chandrabose murder case and demanded that the latter come out with any material evidence he had. “There should be a comprehensive investigation involving the Chief Minister and Home Minister on allegations of bribery. The bribe received by high-level authorities could be the reason for not booking the accused Nisham under KAAPA (Kerala Anti-social Activities Prevention Act). Chandrabose’s dress has gone missing and this could be an attempt to destroy evidence,” he said.

Commenting on the decision to partially close down the Karipur International Airport from May to October, Mr. Balakrishnan said that the move was against the interests of the people of Malabar and that Mumbai and Mangalore airports would benefit from the decision. He requested the Centre and the State to press the airline companies to introduce small and medium-sized aircraft in the routes involving Kozhikode instead of cancelling them. Mr. Balakrishnan alleged that the Chief Minister was not keeping his word with regard to filling vacancies in police and the Fire and Rescue Services and demanded that the posts be filled.

Replying to queries, he said the LDF had never welcomed K.M.. Mani into its fold. He said the party was against political violence,. He said 23 CPI(M) workers had been killed in the four years since the UDF came to power. He questioned why the media was interested in murder politics only when the CPI(M) was the accused. Mr. Balakrishnan announced that the CPI(M) was organising a Protest Collective at 1,000 centres across the State on March 7 against K.M. Mani’s budget presentation.
