The seventh annual conference of the Kerala Heart Rhythm Society (KHRS) has begun at Kadavu Resorts in the district. John Francis, president of KHRS, opened the two-day conference on Sunday, which will discuss in detail the latest advancements in diagnosis, prevention, treatment and care of heart rhythm disorders and path-braking newer technologies in electro-physiology.
Dr. Francis, in his inaugural address, said heart rhythm disorder was a hidden epidemic accounting for roughly 50% of mortality arising from coronary artery diseases.
“Lack of medical research and absence of correct data collection contribute to the devaluation of the problem. The State health sector should immediately focus on and develop schemes to deal with heart rhythm and other cardiovascular problems on par with projects to control infectious diseases, he said.
Dr. Calambur Narasimhan, who was instrumental in establishing the HRS branch in Kerala, was the chief guest. KHRS leaders and doctors K.U. Natarajan, K.K. Narayanan, C.G. Sajeev and Arun Gopi were present.
The two-day conference, attended by more than 300 expert cardiologists from various parts of Kerala, also called upon the government to take up a sustained campaign led by medical experts to spread awareness on the on-time identification of heart rhythm disorders.
