A mass convention organised by the Board of Islamic Service and Missionary Information (BISMI) attached to the Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) here on Friday called upon the government to impose tax on those who conduct ostentatious weddings.

Speakers who addressed the convention also urged the government to encourage people conducting dowry-free mass wedding ceremonies.

State president T.P. Abdullakoya Madhani, who opened the convention, said the Mahal committees should introduce a proper system to monitor such weddings and discourage the trend.

“Similarly, women’s organisations too should come forward to discourage the trend of using huge quantity of gold ornaments for weddings,” he said

Kerala Minority Commission chairman M. Veerankutty and leaders of political parties addressed the convention.

They said religious leaders and people in key positions should abstain from pompous wedding ceremonies to sensitise people on the issue.

Women’s organisations should come forward to organise family meets to highlight the issue and make women aware of the unhealthy trend.

V.K. Bava, chairman of BISMI, presided over the convention. Indian Union Muslim League district president Ummer Pandikasala, All India Youth League convener P.K. Firoz, and representatives of socio-political and cultural organisations were present.
