Even as what led to the Kaithappoyil road accident, which claimed seven lives, continuous to be a mystery, the police have decided to record the statements of more persons who travelled by the Wayanad-bound bus involved in the accident.

The police believe there was negligence on the part of the jeep driver who had reportedly tried to overtake another vehicle on an unsafe stretch, resulting in the collision. Police sources say they intend to cross-check the matter with the bus passengers.

Some witnesses have told the police that there was a suspected lane discipline violation by the bus driver, besides the flouting of speed limit. However, the police are yet to verify the claims, as many of those who met with the accident are yet to recover from shock. The incident will be investigated further by a team led by the Thamarassery Circle Inspector. Meanwhile, the condition of two children admitted to two hospitals in the city was said to be stable on Monday. They were admitted with severe wounds including multiple fractures. The mothers of these children too had sustained multiple fractures.

Hospital sources said the two had been responding well to the treatment, and that they would be able to go home in a week. There were 12 persons, including children, in the jeep that met with the accident last Saturday.
