The assistance of Janamaithri community policing scheme is on the cards for five backward tribal settlements in the limits of Peruvannamoozhi police station. Ahead of the formal launch of the scheme, the police have formed an 11-member ‘Janamaithri Suraksha’ group comprising five tribal promoters for finalising the priority areas.
A senior member from each of the five settlements has been given the responsibility to identify their issues and come up with possible solutions. The tribal chieftain too is part of the ‘Suraksha’ group as his support will be vital to connect with the community members.
“Our plan is to launch the project by next week after the appointment of beat officers and assistant beat officers for the grassroots-level coordination of activities. We have plans to cover 14 wards of the Chakkittappara panchayat under the scheme, in which the main beneficiaries will be the tribal community members,” says Peruvannamoozhi Station House Officer K.K. Rajan. In the second phase, selected wards of Changaroth panchayat will be brought under the scheme.
Education of tribal children will be one of the priority areas for the ‘Janamaithri’ in Peruvannamoozhi. Local body members from the area say the colony members are well aware of the need to educate their children, and most of them send their children to nearby schools. ‘Janamaithri’ will strive to sustain this interest besides helping the talented to think of better higher study options, they add.
Policemen from Peruvannamoozhi station say two tribal colonies are now keen on the education of their children. The ‘Janamaithri’, with the support of the local panchayat and tribal promoters, will chalk out an action plan to change the situation in the other three colonies, they add.
