As many as 155 new accounts were opened in the city on Thursday to mark the formal launch of the Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), which aims at ensuring that there are at least two account holders, including a woman, in every household.
Twenty-nine banking firms participated in the special account opening camp organised by the Lead Bank (Canara Bank) at CSI Hall, here, on Thursday. M.K. Raghavan, MP, inaugurated the district-level launch.
RuPay cards and passbooks were issued on the spot for over 100 persons. The national-level launch of the programme by the Prime Minister was screened live at the camp.
Lead Bank Manager K. Bhuvanadas said 39,475 new accounts were opened in the district from August 16 to August 27 under the scheme. Banks such as Canara Bank, State Bank of India, and Kerala Gramin Bank took the lead by opening more than 5,000 accounts under the scheme, he added.
District Collector C.A. Latha, district panchayat president Kanathil Jameela, Reserve Bank of India Assistant General Manager P. Ravindran and Deputy General Manager of NABARD Suresh Kumar were present during the district-level launch.
