The Corporation Anti-Corruption Campaign Committee has petitioned the City Commissioner of Police to register a case and arrest the Kozhikode Mayor, the Deputy Mayor, and the floor leader of the City Corporation Council for flying the National Flag upside down during the valedictory of the golden jubilee of the Corporation on Saturday.

In his complaint, committee general convener K.P. Vijayakumar said the vehicle carrying the tableau (depicting the salt satyagraha) of the Corporation during the cultural procession had throughout the journey flown the National Flag upside down. Hundreds of people who watched the cultural procession on that day protested against the desecration of the National Flag, he said.

Mr. Vijayakumar alleged that the Corporation had not obtained permission from the District Collector for displaying the National Flag on days other than Republic Day and Independence Day. Mayor A.K. Premajam, Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef, and floor leader M. Mohanan were responsible for insulting the National Flag during the cultural procession, he said.

Cases should be registered under the Prevention of Insults of National Honour Act of the Prevention of Improper Use Act, 1971, he said. It was regrettable that two of the accused were college teachers. The Mayor was also a retired History professor. All three of them had examined the vehicle and tableau before it was flagged off, he said.

Mr. Vijayakumar urged the Commissioner to assign a Deputy Superintendent of Police to investigate the case.

He also produced photographs and video clippings of the cultural procession.
