As part of strengthening the ongoing drive to control the inter-State illegal purchase and resale of tranquilizer drugs, the Drugs Control Department (DCD) here is planning to track the details of persons who were recently arrested by the police in connection with various drug-related cases from the city.
The attempt will be to trace the details of medical shops engaged in the bulk supply of banned drugs and highly sedative tablets to unlicensed traders and their other trade links.
An officer attached to the intelligence wing of DCD said the department has already identified four medical shops located at Mysore in Karnataka from where much of the banned drugs was recently brought to the district.
“To initiate legal action against these traders, we have contacted the drugs control department there and they have promised all technical support to us,” he added.
The decision to track the arrest details was taken as it would help in tracing the illegal drug transportation from other States to Kerala and its distribution among drug addicts. A recent inquiry conducted by the DCD into one such police case had yielded result and it had helped them to locate a few suspected drug dealers outside the State. Usually, the police do not share arrest and seizure details with the DCD.
“We are now looking forward for a better inter-department cooperation in the area between the police and the DCD, ” said the source.
The DCD issued notices to all the regional drug distributors in the district to strictly adhere to guidelines while dealing with drugs containing sedative substances.
Later on, the submission of drug purchase list was made mandatory on a monthly basis. Also the DCD started checking the sales records to trace any suspicious increase in trade. In the action plan, they listed 12 major drugs and strictly monitored the supply of medicines containing three molecules- Spasmo Proxyvon, Codeine Phosphate and Alprazolam.
