Helping children read and write

App, books to teach spellings

Several students, including those in higher classes, often have difficulty with reading and writing, which pull them back in their academics.

‘Ilakal Pacha’ (Leaves are green) is an initiative that helps such students get a hold of languages in an interesting manner. It was developed by Kozhikode-based Asama Charitable Trust based on a study by a group of engineers at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, under the leadership of clinical psychologist Beena George.

Logical application

Ilakal Pacha includes a mobile application combined with four books. The application teaches spellings, but not by way of rote learning. It teaches logical applications in the language and some simple voice rules that help children master spellings automatically. It uses positive reinforcement techniques to create interest in learning as well.

The programme is expected to benefit students from LKG to Class V. The application may be downloaded free of cost from Google Play Store and can be used offline as well. An advanced application and books will be available at a price.
