The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by fish workers and rubber growers and the strike by motor transport workers were peaceful in the district on Wednesday.

No major incidents of violence were reported from any part of the district.

As private buses and taxi services kept off the road, light motor vehicles and two-wheelers were the last resort for travellers stranded at the railway station.

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) a few private buses operated the usual services only after 6 p.m.

However, the KSRTC operated a few emergency services with police escort from the Calicut International Airport in the morning.

Harbours closed

The coastlines of Kozhikode responded positively to the hartal as part of the continuing protests under the Kerala Fisheries Coordination Committee against the implementation of the Meenakumari commission recommendations.

All harbours remained closed the entire day. Fishing boats were found anchored till late in the evening.

Owners of goods and contract carriages cooperated with the strike as per the call of a joint action council of Motor Transport Unions.

Private vehicles were found in all nooks and corners of the city as road interruption and attacks by hartal supporters were minimal.

In the rural areas too, the hartal was total as it was called by rubber growers and dealers in protest against the falling prices of rubber.

Only a few grocery shops and wayside eateries were found functioning as the hartal had the support of three major workers’ coordination committees in the State.
