Vadakara town came to a standstill on Tuesday following a hartal called by opposition parties in protest against the arrest of opposition councillors on Monday. The councillors were arrested as they were staging a sit-in at the municipal office in support of the civic action committee that has been staging a relay strike in protest against the municipality’s plan to set up a waste collection centre on J.T. Road.

Vehicles excluded

Most shops, including fish markets and shops in Adakkatheru and Peruvattumthazha, remained closed. Vehicles had been excluded from the hartal. But the traffic was sparse as commercial establishments remained closed. Shops in Thazhe Angadi that used to boycott hartals too joined the protest this time in support of their neighbours.
