The Government U.P. School at Civil Station in Kozhikode is yet to get back its land from the Kozhikode District Panchayat’s Skill Development Centre despite repeated efforts by the School Protection Committee.

In a meeting held recently, the district panchayat allowed the school to take over two rooms in the building, the refurbishing works of which is going on at present. “This is ridiculous. The district panchayat has no claim over the property,” said ward councillor K.C. Shobhita, who also leads the School Protection Committee.

It was in 2008 that the then District Collector temporarily allotted the building, which belonged to the school, to the panchayat to open a skill development centre. At the time, there were only 22 students in the school. But now, there are 88 students and the school is trying to provide more facilities for the students such as a library, computer lab and more classrooms.

But the panchayat was reluctant to hand over the building. The 1.06 acres where the school and the skill development centre are located belongs to the Education Department. The Revenue Department constructed the building.
