A fire broke out at a sack godown at Valiyangadi in the city on Wednesday night. The incident created panic in the area as the flames threatened to spread to the nearby shops.
Though three units of Fire and Rescue Services team from the beach station reached the spot at 10 p.m. soon after receiving the telephone alert, the situation was brought under control after a half-an-hour-long effort. Fire and Rescue Services units from other parts of the city were also directed to rush to the spot.
According to the official reports, two godowns were gutted in the incident. Several nearby shops were saved wdue to the timely intervention of the force from various stations, they added.
The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
