Taking a cue from former MLA C. Moyinkutty’s solo satyagraha for the renovation and widening of Wayanad Ghat Road, the United Democratic Front (UDF) is planning to intensify protests with the participation of its top leaders.

The UDF district leadership is likely to hold a meeting in two days to finalise the mode of agitation and ensure the active participation of all its allies, including the youth wings.

“Moyinkutty’s strike launched last Thursday was not political in nature as he took up the issue with his personal interest and campaigned in his capacity as an ex-MLA of Thiruvambady constituency. With the continuation of the strike by the UDF, it will get wider political attention and a possible solution at the earliest, exposing the lethargic attitude of the ruling front,” said V. Kunhali, district convener of the UDF.

He said the aim of the UDF protest would be to highlight scientific solutions for road development rather than just creating a political uproar.

The UDF protest, planned with the participation of people from different walks of life, would definitely win State-wide attention with the presence of top leaders, he added.

Alternative road

Along with the Ghat Road renovation, the UDF campaigners would seek the possibility of completing an alternative road to connect Kozhikode with Wayanad. The proposals submitted in this regard during the UDF regime and allegedly ignored by the subsequent government would be a major subject of the campaign.

UDF leaders said the pathetic condition of the mountain pass proved to be a harrowing experience for hundreds of domestic and international tourists travelling to Wayanad. Unexpected traffic blocks as a result of poor road construction troubled emergency ambulance services, they pointed out.
