With the summer foster care programme organised by the Kozhikode district administration in association with the Department of Social Justice for the children of the government children’s homes in the district turning out to be a grand success, plans have been put in place to extend the foster care if needed or even for the foster parents to adopt those children.
Only 31 children of the children’s Homes were introduced to the summer foster care programme for a month during which the children stayed with their foster families.
The aim was for the children who have never known what family life was, to get acquainted with it. As expected, the one-month foster programme created a bond between the children and the foster families, many of whom had expressed their desire to extend the foster care. Some were even ready to adopt the children.
Since the foster homes were selected with utmost care and scrutiny by the officials of the Department of Social Justice, it would not be a bigger effort to extend the period of foster care or enable an adoption.
The 31 children returned to the Children’s Home on Wednesday where the District Collector N.Prashanth, Sub-Judge R.L. Baiju, District Social Justice Officer T.P.Saramma and District Child Protection Officer Sheeba Mumtaz waited for them.
