The message of energy and environment conservation was loud and clear at the 51st Kerala School Science Fair held at the St.Joseph’s Anglo Indian Girls Higher Secondary School in Kozhikode on Friday. Most of the participants concentrated on innovations that reduced burden on nature, and focussed on sustainable development.
Students of Ahmed Kurikkal Memorial Higher Secondary School, Kottur, Malappuram, Henna Sumi and Hanna K. came up with the prototype of a sanitary napkin using jute, cotton and bee wax that does not add to the pile of non-biodegradable waste. The students, after their extensive research in their panchayat, had found that sanitary napkins were one of the major pollutants.

Mohan from Edathanattukara HSS, Palakkad, found that drumstick seeds were very good antibiotics and that they could control diabetes and cholesterol and could purify water to a great extend. The team from Government Higher Secondary School, Karunagappally, discovered that food items sold in Karunagappally taluk were largely adulterated and identified major adulterants.
The working model competition for high school saw students coming up with ideas to reduce wastage of electricity, water and manpower using advanced technology. The ‘Pi-Planter and Fertigation’ project of Rajagiri Higher Secondary School, Kalamassery, was notable for the systematic control of a farm while the team from Koodali HSS, Kannur, came up with a similar, yet slightly different project. Students of KTCT HSS, Thiruvananthapuram, came up with an automated energy saving system for homes. The ‘Cleaning Boat’ by NSHSS, Valoor, Thrissur, a system to clean a water source without affecting its natural eco-system was one of the star attractions of the festival on Friday.
