Setting an imitable model, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel from the Beach station, on Friday, handed over 31 consent letters to the District Panchayat expressing their willingness to donate organs.

Mayor A.K. Premajam inaugurated the formal ceremony in which M.K. Raghavan, MP, formally handed over the consent letters on behalf of the Fire and Rescue Services team to district panchayat president K. Jameela. The initiative came from the rescue team following a suggestion made by Leading Fireman V.S. Anil Kumar.

Officials from the divisional office of Fire and Rescue Services said this would be a beginning and personnel from all other stations in the district would shortly sign their consent letters for the cause. Staff members of Meenchanda and Vellimadukunnu fire stations would hadn over their consent letters in the next phase, they hinted.

Arun Bhaskar, Assistant Divisional Officer of Fire and Rescue Services said the initiative was taken to support the ‘Snehasparsham’ scheme of the district panchayat. “We hope to enroll altogether 100 personnel from various fire stations in the city to promote organ donations on our part,” he added.

Along with the Fire and Rescue Services officials, their family members too would join the initiative within a short span. Coordinators of the drive said majority of the family members had already communicated their wish to be part of the movement and sign the consent letters.
