Finance wing refuses to release VC’s salary

Calicut University Syndicate members have demanded that Vice Chancellor (VC) M. Abdul Salam quit his post in the wake of two recent arraignments against him by Chancellor P. Sathasivam.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Syndicate members P.M. Niyas, V.P. Abdul Hameed, Fatimat Zuhara, and K. Viswanathan said the Vice Chancellor had lost his moral standing to continue in that post. “Dr. Salam has been found guilty of anti-democratic behaviour and drawing double wages illegally. He has no moral right to hang on to the post of the Vice Chancellor. He should step down,” said Mr. Niyas.

He accused the Vice Chancellor’s office of bypassing the legal cell of the university in several important issues. “The action smacks of corruption at the highest level,” he said.

File yet to be cleared

Meanwhile, the university released the salary of all its employees on Wednesday except that of the VC in the wake of the recent directive from the Chancellor asking him to re-fix his salary. Though the file re-fixing the salary of Dr. Salam was sent to his office on Friday last, the Vice Chancellor was yet to clear the file, causing confusion among the officials. The Finance Officer, on Wednesday, turned down a request by Pro Vice Chancellor K. Ravindranath to release the VC’s salary as per the last month’s pay. The Finance Department was of the view that Dr. Salam could not be given salary without re-fixing his wages in the light of the Governor’s order.
