It has been three years since noted writer-orator Sukumar Azhikode passed away. Considering his contributions to the cultural scenario of Kozhikode, one would expect at least a commemoration meeting.

At least Anoop Peruvannamuzhi felt so and he took it upon himself to protest against the injustice to the memory of one of the most celebrated orators of our times.

Mr. Anoop went on a dawn-to-dusk hunger strike in front of the main gate of Mananchira Square in Kozhikode on Saturday, the 3{+r}{+d}death anniversary of Azhikode, not just against the neglect towards the writer's memory, but towards cultural deterioration in general.

This young man who works in a jewellery store in Vellore, is from Peruvannamuzhi and has protested similarly before the Town Hall in Kozhikode last year for the same occasion.

However, his protest did not receive much attention and hence he decided to stage it again at Mananchira, where he thinks his efforts will get noticed better.

Anoop said the State was not paying much attention to the house of Azhikode in Thrissur though it has been declared a protected monument. He said the doors and windows of the house had been damaged. The house contained books worth lakhs and the government should protect them, he said.

He also sought a memorial for Azhikode in Kozhikode.
