Mayor A.K. Premajam on Saturday opened the district-level Onam celebrations at the main venue on the beach here. The celebrations began with a thematic dance performance by the ‘Matha Perambra’ team and a music show by Jana Ranjini.

In her inaugural address, Ms. Premajam said the Onam celebrations in the district truly reflected the spirit of the Malayali community of considering the traditional rituals as part of their life.

“Here, we do not see anybody as mere spectators; all have a role in the celebrations,” she said.

A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, who presided over the function, said the venues selected for the celebrations this year showed the spirit of the city in celebrating festivals such as Onam with the support of all community members.

“This year, we have arranged special venues at Kuttichira and Tali for a more harmonious celebration,” he added.

Actor Parvathy Menon was the chief guest. District Collector C.A. Latha and representatives of various socio-cultural and political organisations were present.

The Onam celebrations will be on till September 18. District-level programmes will be held at eight venues. The Beach open-stage, Tagore Hall and Town Hall will host the major cultural events.
