Fewer educated women are taking up jobs in Kerala, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has said.

Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Women, privacy, jobs, and status’ organised by the All-Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association to mark its diamond jubilee here on Thursday, Ms. Shylaja pointed out that around 60% of educated women in the State were reluctant to take up jobs.

Women were not keen to join politics and social service. Remnants of the feudal system still exist in the country and capitalistic values were gaining ground too. Women were bearing the brunt of these developments as both these systems suppress them.

The Minister said the tendency to insult women was on the rise across sectors, especially in music and cinema. Women were being insulted in movie dialogues and songs. Those who criticised this tendency were being victimised. She praised actor Prithviraj for tendering an apology for involving in movies that were anti-women.

T.K. Anandi, gender adviser to the State government, said that the assaults on women at workplaces were not being properly recorded often. The situation would have been different had they been documented properly, Minister added.
