The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has extended support to the crew of Tamil-starrer Mersal , which has been at the receiving end of Sangh Parivar outfits for its reported criticism of Goods and Services Tax and demonetisation.
In a press release here on Saturday, DYFI president P.A. Mohammed Riyas said: “We cannot understand why the BJP is so antithetical to cinema dialogues critical of its government. It shows that party’s fascist mentality.”
Mr. Riyas said that party leaders threatening the film’s producer and demanding that it be re-censored pose a challenge to freedom of expression.
“Also, the attempt to tarnish the reputation of the lead actor and his wife by calling their caste name is a matter of shame,” Mr. Riyas added.
The DYFI’s move comes against the backdrop of actor Kamal Hassan and director Pa. Ranjith extending support to the crew.
