Drought relief work costing Rs.24 lakh has been announced for the district to ease drinking water shortage in the summer months.

The district’s drought relief programme will be formally launched in Koyilandy on May 5, District Collector Latha has said.

Announcing the commencement of drought-relief operations on Saturday, Ms. Latha has said the schemes to tackle the dry spell that were submitted by local bodies have been cleared for implementation.

Community participation is being sought in a big way for the government’s initiatives to combat drought this summer.

Under the ‘Clean and Beautiful’ drought relief programme, the focus is on protecting and preserving water sources and keeping them free from pollution.

Under the scheme, wells are being cleaned and deepened and water storage tanks are being repaired. Such schemes are under way in Kunnummel and Nochad panchayats.

Similar drought relief works are also under way in Perambra.

T.K.A. Azees, president of Mampuzha Protection Committee, has announced full support for district administration’s efforts to keep water bodies clean.
