District gears up for Shobhayatras

Sreekrishna Jayanthi to be plastic-free

KOZHIKODE: Balagokulam will conduct 3,500 major and minor Shobhayatras in Kozhikode district on the occasion of Sreekrishna Jayanthi on Tuesday.

‘Safe Childhood, Virtuous India’ is the motto of the celebrations this year. Balagokulam State secretary K. Mohandas said the celebrations would be completely plastic-free, and that no flex boards would be used.

Children dressed as various mythical characters will be a major attraction of Shobhayatras. They will be accompanied by musicians and tableaux. The regional Shobhayatras will begin at 3 p.m. and will converge on Mahashobhayatras, which will conclude around 5.30 p.m.

Five chariots

Meanwhile, five chariots will roam about the city from 5 a.m. onwards. Prasadam will be distributed at government homes for children and elderly, Sevabharathi, Balikasadanam, and Balasadanam at Kottooli. Incidentally, the day is also observed as ‘Baladinam’.

The Mahashobhayatra will begin from the Sreekanteshwara temple premises at 3.30 p.m. The smaller Shobhayatras will begin from Sree Thayat Bhagavathi Temple, Sree Durga Temple, Gandhi Road, Sree Azhakodi Devi Temple, Sree Thrissala Bhagavathi Temple, and the Kallai Railway station premises. They will converge on the Mahashobhayatra at various points before concluding at the Annaporneshwari Temple at Muthalakkulam.
