Digital week to target techno-savvy youth

Observance to commence today

July 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - Kozhikode:

The techno-savvy youth immersed in the making of utility mobile applications to facilitate quick online service delivery will be the centre of the district-level Digital India Week observance scheduled to commence here on July 6.

Entries have been invited from interested candidates who are in the field of building various technological interfaces to facilitate e-governance.

As per a recent decision of District Collector N. Prasanth, applications screened from the total number of entries will be eligible to attend a district-level demonstration programme at the Collectorate during the week-long digital India observances. Plans are there to make use of these inventions to facilitate various district-level e-services.

Any other creative inventions related to the information technology (IT) sector will be encouraged if the findings are fit to address the digital divide.

The main objective of conducting the programme is to accept suggestions from all quarters to think of newer technological interventions to facilitate the citizens’ easy access to various government services.

Officials said they had already received several entries to the programme, which would be screened for the district-level demonstration. “We have not limited the participation to techies alone as the entry is open to all citizens.

They can also come up with proposals on newer IT solutions to the mission,” they said.

To begin with the digital drive, the district administration has previously launched an Android mobile application ‘Collector Kozhikode’ offering quick access to a series of services related to the Revenue Department.

Five main services are currently available through the mobile application, which is available for free download in the Google play store. A separate application too is on the anvil under the headship of the National Informatics Centre for facilitating various other services.

Officials said the Digital India observances would be memorable for the district with the declaration of the new WiFi hotspots for the selected destinations of the city. District Collector N. Prasanth would declare the beginning of the new service to the city as part of the Digital India Week observances.
