Lack of insfrastructure and shortage of staff have hampered the city Corporation’s efforts to find a solution to the stray dog menace.

In a bid to find a solution to the stray dog menace, an enterprising youth from Kozhikode has developed a cage-like device, which can simultaneously entrap more than one dog without causing them harm.

G. Muneer, who developed the cage using iron-bars and iron-net, told reporters at a press conference here on Monday that he developed the device at a cost of Rs.20,000. He said the device was successfully tested with a smaller size of the coop, which he later expanded into a 12-ft long, 8-ft wide and 6.5-ft high structure.

The dogs are lured into the cage by the bait (meat or bone). The door shuts automatically and the dog is further lured to another cubicle making way for more dogs to follow.

The dogs can be either taken out for sterilisation before they are freed or can be moved to a rehabilitation home. He said frequent media reports about the public nuisance posed by stray dogs in different parts of the city had prompted him to think of a solution to the pressing issue. “I came to know that the city Corporation also was struggling with the crisis as there were hardly any trained persons available to capture the dogs,” he said. His device requires no trained hands to capture them.

Mr. Muneer said he had held talks with the Corporation authorities on the possibility of using it for capturing stray-dogs. “The Deputy Mayor has agreed for a meeting to discuss it,” he said. According to him, a final decision about using it for the purpose could be taken only after taking various aspects into consideration. “We need to get the consent of various departments,” he said.

Mr. Muneer is now getting ready to fix his canine trap near the Kallayi Bridge, where there are reportedly a large number of stray dogs..
