‘DEEP’ under way in Koyilandy Assembly constituency

December 08, 2014 09:17 am | Updated 09:17 am IST - Kozhikode:

Following the PRISM (Promoting Regional Schools to International Standards through Multiple Intervention) model of development implemented in some of the city schools, the government schools in Koyilandy Assembly constituency too are on the track of a facelift under a similar scheme.

The scheme is called DEEP (Dasan Educational Empowerment Programme) conceived by the local body representatives from the region.

Schools covered

The scheme, which is specially designed to improve the physical amenities and academic programmes of the selected schools, will initially cover Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Payyoli; Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Boys, Koyilandy; Government Mappila Vocational Higher Secondary School, Koyilandy; and Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Koyilandy.

As per the project report, nearly Rs.10 crore will be invested in the first phase for the development of physical amenities in these institutions with the support of various voluntary contributors.

Innovations

New school buildings, science labs, special coaching centres to prepare for competitive examinations, medicinal gardens, and IT-equipped class rooms are some of the innovations planned under the physical amenities improvement programme.

First phase

K. Dasan, MLA, who heads the project implementation, says the first phase of the scheme, formally inaugurated by Minister for Panchayats and Social Justice M.K. Muneer, is currently under way in all the selected schools in his constituency.

“The project will bring in a sweeping change in incorporating the modern technology in our class rooms,” he adds.

Rural areas

Since the identified schools are mostly located in rural areas, the project will lay special emphasis on preserving the traditional knowledge and cultural heritage of the region along with the usual academic programmes.

Heritage Park, cultural village, repository of native knowledge, and virtual resource centres are some of the new facilities planned under the DEEP.

Mr. Dasan says that the cooperation of parents of the school students, too, will be sought for the successful implementation of the scheme in selected schools.

“To make them aware of the face-lift programmes, we will frequently hold review meetings and come up with a special booklet for the reference of parents,” Mr. Dasan adds.
