Some portrayed the “burning” brightness of it, while others focused on exposing the “tigerness” of the big cat.

Some others preferred to depict the helplessness of it in a cage, while others attempted to bring deforestation and its ill-effects on tigers to the spotlight besides the cruelty of the people, who poach them for a few quick pennies.

All of them were contestants in a school-level painting competition organised by the Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department in association with the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium (RSC) and the Kozhikode regional centre of the Zoological Survey of India in connection with the International Tiger Day celebrations at the RSC here on Wednesday.

N. K. Abhishek of Sivapuram Higher Secondary School bagged the first prize in the high school section of the painting competition while T. M. Vishnu Prasad of Ilahiya Higher Secondary School, Kappad, won the second prize.

In the Upper Primary section of the event , P. P. Abhay of AUP School Nanmanda bagged the first prize and Sreenanda Sreejith of Ursulin Senior Higher Secondary School, Kannur, secured the second prize.

In a quiz competition organised at the ZSI Kozhikode Centre as part of the celebrations, P. Deepak of SBPHS, Ramanattukara, bagged the first prize. P. Vinay of Rani Public School, Vadakara, got the second prize.

Over 50 students from different schools across the Malabar region participated in the painting competition while as many as 38 students vied for the prizes in the quiz competition.

E. Pradeep Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests, Northern Region, Kozhikode gave away the prizes.

P.M. Sureshan, Officer-in-Charge, ZSI, Kozhikode Centre, gave the Tiger Day Message on the occasion. Divisional Forest Officer, Kozhikode, Amandeep Kaur; RSC Education officer P.M. Sunilkumar; and Assistant Conservator of Forest (social forestry) K.P. Udayakumar among others spoke.
