Water has immense possibilities. Very few understand the magical features of water better than a watercolour artist. Sreejith Vilathapuram’s exhibition of watercolour paintings at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery in Kozhikode is a study of those myriad possibilities.

The exhibition features around 50 paintings mostly on themes related to the countryside and rural life. However, there are select frames that he has dedicated to the pure beauty of nature where the blending of colours leaves one spellbound.

There are paintings that depend entirely on the unique features of the medium with minimal use of brushstrokes to bring them to life.

Like most artists, Sreejith too experimented with various media during his student days. After a brief stint in the Middle East, he returned to his home town of Kozhikode and decided to make a career out of art.

He did not have to think twice to choose his medium. “I like the transparency of the watercolour. It may seem simple, but is very complicated. Once done, there is not much scope for change,” he said.

The exhibition that began on Thursday was inaugurated by artist Madanan. It concludes on November 21.
