The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation has been asked to take immediate steps to address the issues of the Corporation Health Centre at Vellayil. The building of the centre is in a dilapidated condition.

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) councillor Soufiya Aneesh brought the condition of the centre to the corporation council’s notice during the council meeting on Wednesday. She said the scarcity of medicines was a serious issue at the centre, which largely caters to the fishing community in the region. “The employees at the centre are forced to adjust with whatever medicines are available,” she said.

The infrastructure at the centre was also poor. “The absence of a proper toilet is causing inconvenience to the patients, especially the aged and pregnant women,” Ms. Soufiya said.

Councillor C. Abdurahman demanded that the corporation should address the issue on a war-footing.

Health Standing Committee chairman K.V. Baburaj said the leaking roof of the centre was a major issue. He said the corporation had included the development of the centre in its project plans. He also said that the scarcity of medicines was due to faulty distribution.
