The corporation has issued licences to only two agencies to collect slaughter waste in Kozhikode.

The Health wing of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation has started serving ‘correction notices’ on meat stalls in the city in view of the malpractice found at these stalls

The corporation had conducted inspections at beef, mutton and chicken stalls across the city, and found that most of them worked in unhygienic conditions. Animals are often slaughtered within the shop and the meat is not properly covered or protected while being displayed. Many stalls were unlicensed, and disposed the slaughter waste, including blood, into drainages in many parts of the city. In many places, waste is being disposed into Connolly Canal or other waterbodies. Many chicken stalls have encroached on roads or footpaths, causing discomfort to pedestrians. Plastic carry bags are being used in most stalls. Stale meat was seized from one stall. The corporation is awaiting the test report from a veterinary college in Wayanad to take action.

The disposal of slaughter waste on the beach is another problem, and the corporation authorities had recently shut down some slaughter waste collection centres in connection with the issue.

Health Officer R.S. Gopakumar clarified that only two agencies had been given licences by the corporation to collect slaughter waste from meat vendors. Though most meat vendors claimed that they gave their waste to these agencies, they could not produce any documents to prove their claim.

The Health Officer said that the meat stalls that were issued notices had to correct their faults within seven days. “If they fail to do it, the corporation will take action against them,” he said.
