A Border Security Force (BSF) head constable shot dead a BSF Inspector deployed for elections duty near Vadakara in Kozhikode district on Thursday night.

The deceased has been identified as Ram Gopal Meena, 45, of Rajasthan. The incident took place at the BSF camp at Kottakkal Islamic Academy School at around 11,30 p.m. A police team led by the Vadakara DYSP has launched a hunt for BSF jawan, Umesh Pal Yadav of Uttar Pradesh, who escaped with the rifle after the incident.

It is not clear what led to the shooting. But unofficial sources said that a duel broke between the jawan and the Inspector over granting of leave to the former. The incident took place at the BSP camp where the jawan was staying for election duty.

At least six bullets would have pierced his body. The body of the victim was kept at the Vadakara Cooperative Hospital. It would be released only after an inquest and post mortem on Friday.
