Contractors to march to Raj Bhavan on March 3

February 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - Kozhikode:

The Kerala Government Contractors Association has sought the intervention of the Governor to resolve the impasse existing in the construction sector caused by the quarry strike.

It also sought the Governor’s help to solve the ‘unfavourable atmosphere’ against it allegedly created by the government in the State.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the association office bearers said a march would be taken out to the Raj Bhavan in the State capital on March 3 by its members. Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the march, which will also present a mass memorandum to the Governor, said Varghese Kannampally, State president of the association.

Tough times

The government contractors are already going through a tough time with a large number of bill amounts remaining unpaid to them for the last 14 months, the association members said.

Effective steps needed

It is high time that the government does something effective and concrete to salvage the construction sector of the State if the infrastructure development of the State is to make any progress, they said.

The association alleged that the government was unimaginative and unwise in its approach while dealing with crucial matters related to the construction sector.

Important setcor

The construction sector is one of most important areas as far as the development of the State was concerned, they said.

Seeking urgent measures to end the quarry strike, the association also demanded that the State government intervene to reduce the price of cement in the Kerala market as was done by the authorities in Tamil Nadu.
