A resignation letter reportedly sent by an Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) councillor, K. Mohammedali, to newspaper offices created confusion in the Corporation council on Monday in both the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) circles.

The copy of the letter drafted in his official letter pad and signed by Mr. Mohammedali, who represented the Vellayil division (ward 66), said he had resigned from post of councillor.

He cited disturbance over some recent issues as reason.

Contents of the letter

It also mentioned that the resignation letter had been sent to the Corporation Secretary and thanked the media for lending him support for various development initiatives he had undertaken during the last three years.

However, Corporation officials said they had received no such resignation letter. Neither the IUML city nor the district units were aware of such a development.

Official procedure

Mayor A.K. Premajam said officially a Councillor had to submit his resignation letter to the Corporation Secretary. “Following the news, I contacted the Secretary and he confirmed that he had not received any resignation letter,” she said.

But Mr. Mohammedali had given a letter a week ago applying for a month’s leave. “He said he was going to Dubai for starting a business venture,” Ms. Premajam said.

Mr. Mohammedali was unavailable for comments. His mobile phone remained switched off.

Seats in Council

The Congress-led UDF has 34 members in the 75-member City Corporation Council.

The CPI (M)-led LDF has seven more seats than the UDF. The IUML alone has 10 seats. Mr. Mohammedali is the party leader in the Corporation Council.
