: A people’s collective has come forward for the protection of Iruthullippuzha at Thamarassery after the river originating from the Ghat region of Wayanad faced threats from polluters, sand-miners and encroachers.

The committee formed on Saturday to protect the river comprised Kudumbasree workers, members of different voluntary organisations, students and cultural and sports clubs in the region. A number of cases were reported in the past of miscreants and anti-social elements dumping waste material, including from slaughter houses and chicken stalls, into the river, which is an important water body with a crucial role in maintaining the water level in the domestic wells in the region.

As a precautionary step, the committee members had suggested fixing of iron nets on the sides of the Koodathayi Bridge across the river to prevent people from dumping waste from the bridge into the river during night hours.
