The ‘Suchitwa Nagaram Sundara Nagaram’ project of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation will take off on Saturday with an awareness programme for ward-level representatives.

The programme will be held at the S.K. Pottekkat Cultural Centre.

The Corporation plans to enlist the services of residents associations, street committees, merchants, students, and voluntary organisations to ensure proper implementation of the project that aims for a completely clean city with efficient waste disposal programmes from New Year.

The Corporation has set aside Rs.30 lakh for the project which aims to tackle hygiene problems of the city such as throwing away garbage aimlessly, especially in ecologically sensitive areas.

The local body also plans to collect and treat all garbage produced in the city in centralised and de-centralised manner.

Decentralised projects

Individual households and apartment complexes, besides hotels and other merchant establishments will be encouraged to take up decentralised waste management projects like biogas plants and pipe composts.

By making the streets and the public places spotlessly clean, the Corporation intends to tackle outbreak of contagious diseases that the authorities have to tackle especially during monsoon.

The aim is also to keep up the clean city image created a while ago.

The campaign has been divided into four phases. In the first phase, various committees, an implementation cell, a seven-member advisory committee and a resource team have been formed.

Primary preparations such as removing the existing garbage on the streets, spot-fining those who spill garbage, finding agencies to tackle plastic waste, ensuring that plastic thinner than 40 microns is not used, and finding out what private enterprises in the city do with their garbage, will begin on Saturday.

All over the city

In the second phase, there will be cleanliness drives and awareness classes all over the city under the aegis of various residents’ organisations and street committees.

In the third phase, any loopholes or failures in the second phase will be cleared. Mosquito eradication programmes will be undertaken in this phase.

Massive cleaning drive is planned during the school vacation for Christmas. Days between December 25 and 30 will be high alert days.

The fourth phase of the project will be to retain the cleanliness achieved as part of the campaign.
