In a bid to effectively tackle goonda menace, the City police, on Saturday, launched the operations of its newly constituted special squad — ‘City Spiders’ — with a strength of six policemen.
The armed squad, comprising civil police officers trained in martial arts and fighting tactics, would offer their quick services to the shadow police team, local police stations, and civilians to fight goonda attacks on the spot.
They were also given a special uniform in black colour, which almost resembles the State’s commando force.
The police department has allotted a special vehicle for the squad, which includes policemen who have proved their martial arts skills in national and international competitions.
The operations of the team will be coordinated directly by Assistant Commissioner of Control Room K.K. Moideen Kutty under the guidance of City Police Commissioner A.V. George. A Sub- Inspector has been given charge of monitoring the field operations and movements.
The city police constituted the special wing, claimed to be the first of its kind in the State, in the wake of a recent goonda attack in the city in which a man was severely beaten up and hospitalised. The attack at Mavoor Road junction had created panic among the public as the goons had carried lethal weapons and blocked the traffic.
Though the squad would be officially on duty from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., its service would be available for the public and other police departments at any time in case of emergency situations. Service request can be made by dialling 100 — the official helpline number of the police.
Patrolling Other than addressing the goonda menace, the squad will also conduct regular patrolling in the city’s crowded spots and tourism locations, including beaches and bus stands, to ensure the safety of people and check anti-social menace.
Citizens can also contact the squad on phone: 9497990119 or 497934857 for help.
