CITU State general secretary Elamaram Karim has said the four-day general council meeting of the trade union, beginning here on Friday, would come up with a reinvigorated drive against the economic policies of the Modi government.

The meeting, to be attended by most of the 430 members from across the country, would debate the national and international labour scene and the drastic changes taking place on the labour front.

It would discuss how to resist the economic policies of the Union government that had badly impacted the lives of the working class, he told The Hindu .

On Wednesday, a ‘Jan Ekta, Jan Prathirodh Andolan’ platform consisting of 100 organisations, apart from the trade unions, would be launched to fight the Centre’s economic and social policies. The platform aims for Jan Ekta (people's unity), Jan Prathirodh (people’s defence) and Jan Adhikar (people’s power).

On Thursday, at a trade union unity meeting to be held as part of the general council meeting, top State leaders of other major unions would discuss ways to strengthen their unity for the joint struggle for securing workers’ interests.

Asked to comment on the ‘Vayalkilikal’ agitation at Taliparamba, Mr. Karim said the CITU would not support such “isolated” anti-development struggles. “We are against such anarchic agitations,” he said.

He claimed that the agitation had been hijacked by “external” forces for political gain.

He also claimed that the union had not raised public funds for the conduct of the meeting; the funds were raised from among the members of the union. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would address a rally at the end of the general council meeting on Monday.
