Child rights panel against mobile tower near Kozhikode govt. school

Paren-Teachers Association complains that building is not strong enough to hold tower’s weight.

July 31, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:21 am IST - Kozhikode:

The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has ordered the temporary discontinuation of construction of a mobile phone tower near the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Cheruvannur.

The order was passed based on a petition filed by the Parent-Teacher Association of the school on grounds that the building on which the tower was proposed to come up was not fit enough to hold its weight and that the radiation from the tower would physically and mentally affect the children.

The Commission has asked the secretary of the Kozhikode Corporation to ensure that an official no lesser in rank than an executive engineer in the Public Works Department check the building.

The construction should be put off until the said official submits a report that the building is fit for tower construction.

The secretary should send a notice to the firm that constructs the tower to put off the construction and also inform the Commission within 40 days the measures taken in this regard. However, the Commission has not mentioned in the order the alleged possibility of radiation.
