Chicken waste is one of the biggest pollutants of rivers in Kozhikode district. The Kozhikode Corporation has come up with a project to curb the menace by setting up a chicken waste treatment plant in the city.
Corporation Health Officer R.S. Gopakumar said the tendering process for the plant, which would be completely operated by private agencies, was in the final stage and the plant would be set up in about six months.
The plant will have the capacity to process around 40 tonnes of chicken waste everyday. The waste, including feathers will be subject to dry rendering, reducing the volume to 23%. The dried waste will then be powdered and used to extract chicken oil. The remaining cake will be used in pet food.
The corporation will have no investment in the project as the selected agency will identify the land and find the capital for the project. They will have to pay the corporation a royalty. The agencies will collect chicken waste from the slaughterhouses at the rate of ₹7 per kilogram.
